Bruce Wayne and Tim Drake were particularly used to sudden raids on the offices of Wayne Enterprises, normally Duke, as Signal, would intervene if it was his shift, or, if Dick was in town, he would wear the Batman suit and kick out the criminals of the offices. On that occasion, due to unknown factors —which completely altered the statistics that Tim presented in his family bonding nights— they were attacked by someone with probably alien technology… which ended up turning them into nothing more than dust before help arrived.
Alternatively: After Dr. Banner's snap, Bruce Wayne and Tim Drake are taken from their original universe, ending up in an alternate one in which everything is so similar but at the same time incredibly different. And as a way of obtaining information of this new world Tim makes use of his slightly illegal stalking skills and gets a job as a photographer.
